ECHOCARDIOGRAM

ECHOCARDIOGRAM PRODUCES IMAGES OF THE HEART BY USING SOUND WAVES. THESE IMAGES CAN HELP IDENTIFY ABNORMALITIES OF THE HEART MUSCLES OR VALVES AND FLUID AROUND THE HEART.

HOW ECHO WORKS?

ECHO operates like the sonar used by whales and submarines to locate objects under water. In ECHO, harmless sound waves, generated from a small device (transducer) held onto your chest, are bounced off your heart structures and beamed back to a screen, where they are recorded. The images on the screen are used to diagnose the heart's movements or certain heart abnormalities.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ECHO

  • You will be asked to remove the clothing on your upper body or over your left chest.

  • An ECHO transducer will be lubricated with gel and the physician will hold it in various places across your chest. You may be asked to lie in different positions.
